The game is on and James and Roger are totally willing of playing.
‘Monday’ pushes on the accelerator and floods us with numerous details and, of course, a new unexpected body. Rita, twice, demonstrates to be fundamental for our heroes; the first opportunity looms on the horizon when she has to investigate on Ivonne and Justin lives. Rita impeccably unravels the connection between them. Ivonne and Justin – even though the readers knew already – were under psychological treatment again. The finding of Justin’s Oyster card and Ivonne’s tube tickets – even though, I have to admit, may lack of realism – reveals that they both regularly travelled to Marble Arch. The destiny wanted that James had picked up a dirty business card in the ‘Don’s den’ which was readily and thoroughly analysed by our Rita. Of course, she discovers where and whom it belongs; an associated studio of psychological consultancy just a few minutes from the said station. Another important event happens: James and Roger meet Mark for the first time. What happens is…no, let me finish to praise Rita. The second opportunity subsequently appears when the two detectives need to gathered information about Doctor Heisemberg (Mark, for them who haven’ read the chapter). She is exquisite again in providing what they need. Well done, Rita! If you were my favourite, now I’m definitely in love with you. (I shouldn’t say that, because Roger may hear me. Have you noticed the unexpected compliment he says to her? Perhaps, love is in the air?) In the alleged Heisemberg’s dwelling, James and Roger realise that something is really wrong. An abandoned house, a fake doctor, a hidden notebook, a postcard, and a new-found body make this case more than demanding. The assumptions James, Roger and Rita make seem to be thrilling and scaring: Heisemberg would be Gregor, a patient with serious psychological problems and a tendency to personify other identities – if you thought that he had only taken the doctor identity, think again. A terrible fire and a subsequent weird situation at the hospital appear to confirm that. But interrogatives bug us: whose is the body in the house? What was she doing? Unfortunately, this is not the right time for answering to these doubts! I hinted James and Roger met Mark/Heisemberg. It’s quick and harsh, and it ends with Mark’s apparent victory. Don’t worry, justice will have its course. What happened to Don? He carries on his personal hunt. Don – thanks to Ivonne’s journal – finds Mark’s office and then his personal address. Don flies to Mark’s house for cornering him. He wants the killer to confess his terrible wrong-doings. Sympathy for Don. And a huge respect and admiration for Gimmy; he’s our second hero. Gimmy believes in his friendship with Don, and he is deeply fond of him. Although he wants Don to give up his revenge, he grudgingly let him go, because he realises that friendship means to be close to a friend even when you disagree with him. We like them, don’t we? We want Don to win this challenge, don’t we? Yeah, we want. The destiny apparently - or the author of the novella (chuckle) – prefers to render things a little bit more complicated: Mark captures Don. We don’t know what will happen to him. Will he survive? Will he get out of Mark’s house? If you want to discover how the mystery goes on, the new chapter “Tuesday” is now available on Wattpad for free. It’s said that the creation of the world took six days, the seventh was dedicated to rest. “Sunday” may be considered a sort of day off before the story starts rocking.
A sweet, young couple found out the body of a dead man on their first date – for them who haven’t a good knowledge of London’s parks, Hyde Park is one of the biggest parks in the city and it’s adjacent to Kensington Gardens, where Ivonne’s body was discovered. The finding triggers the assumption that the killer may be serial. Besides, Justin, the recent victim, has a psychological record as troublesome and problematic as Ivonne’s. He divorced his wife – apparently because he selfishly didn’t take care of her – and he wasn’t in a good relationship with his daughter – during the torture, Mark repetitively pointed these details out. We have no connection between Justin and Ivonne, though. May their difficult lives be the reason which binds them together? Or is it their mental health the right connection? We know it’s this the motive, but James and Roger will have to discover why. The detectives finally realise why Don broke into Ivonne’s flat: stealing her journal. They find the broken, pink latch in a shelter used by the homeless. What will be written in those secret and personal pages? How they really important? These questions have to hover over the readers for a while. Mark appears in the last paragraph as the lovely and sweet father welcoming his daughter and wife who got back from the short holiday in the countryside. He’s double-face; Mark is a terrible and cold-blood killer who tortures his victims without flinching, but he also is the perfect husband – seriously, isn’t he amiable when he asks Maggie if she fancies a hot infusion and a massage? His theatrical ability to act two different roles seems to falter: exactly when Maggie, for the first time, notices the fake wooden panel beneath the stairs, Mark’s wrath explodes. Is he losing control of the situation? Even though he is, Maggie is blinded by the love she feels for him and, probably, although the fiery reaction shocks her, she won’t ever see Mark’s real face. (Will she?) The fourth chapter of “The fear eater” is available on Wattpad for free. If you want to read “Monday” CLICK HERE, lay comfortably on the sofa, and enjoy the story. Thanks a lot and see you soon. ‘Saturday’ was a rich and dense storm of events, which principally introduced the main characters of ‘The fear eater’.
Let’s begin with the detectives: DCI James Murphy and DCI Roger Clarkson. Our two sleuths have longer worked together; they perfectly know each other, and they dealt with several crimes and murderers. Although James and Roger have teamed up for a long time, they are quite different. James is clearly a rational and pondering person who becomes a man of action when it’s strictly needed; he leads the investigation without immediately jumping to conclusion and tries sensibly to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. The arrest of a suspect must happen only when the accused bloke guiltiness is rationally demonstrated by the proofs gathered during the investigation. Roger, contrarily, is pure action; he’s not a contemplative and pondering guy. Observing and analysing should come before taking any action which might end up being wrong and causing useless troubles. He’s impatient and wants to snatch the culprit. The lack of patience is slowed down by James numerous times. Although these different attitudes, they balance each other by creating a perfect and well-working duo of detectives. We, then, have another central character: Don. Don is the most intimate friend of Ivonne; he knows a lot of her and strongly believes in their friendship. Is he very fond of her – like brothers and sisters – or is he in deep love with Ivonne? Very hard to say. I like to think that Don might have been in love with Ivonne, and so might Ivonne. A sweet relationship based on mutual feelings and deep emotions. They had very much similar tough lives, though; family’s tragedy and depression fell on Ivonne’s life as a carpenter’s axe on a log, leading her to undertake the path of psychological treatment. When she thought of having fixed her mental condition, the profound and resurfacing remorse of her son’s suicide brought her back to darkness. Don’s life is an intriguing mystery; we basically don’t know anything about him, but – by Sally’s words – he was kind and good-mannered (he once helped Ralph, Sally’s two years old son, do you remember?), which might lead us to guess that he could have had a regular life - maybe with a family? What we definitely get from the story is that Don is a man of principles and values; he really believes in friendship, love and respect. He doesn’t think twice to run after Ivonne’s killer and seek for justice, even though he decides to carry out it independently without the help of the police. We finally discover the real nature of Mark: he is the bad guy; he is the killer; he is ‘the fear eater’. The mentioned parcel is nothing else than a patient of him, kidnapped and rapidly delivered. Mark uses his job for attracting people who suffer from phobias. Others’ fears are Mark food. The more he feels the fear of his victims, the more he feels satisfied and full. One question may pop into your mind: wasn’t Mark publishing academic articles on magnetic fields? How comes he has patients? Enigmas are the soul of crime stories, don’t brood on that too much. The solution will be unravelled! Rita personally is my favourite character; she acts in the shadow. Even though she seems to be absent and secondary, her work fundamentally helps the detectives. Rita is the exhibit officer, which means that proofs and exhibits collected on the crime scenes are objects of her interest and classification; she mainly passes her time in laboratory by examining and recording data. Although she always has a lot of job to do, she never refuses to help James and Roger during their investigation, even when she is not supposed to. The third chapter ‘Sunday’ has been released on Wattpad for free. ‘The fear eater’ waits for you, just CLICK HERE and enjoy the reading. Take care, readers, and see you soon! Here we are!
The first part of “The fear eater” came out and it introduced the first character: Mark. But, who is Mark? He’s a normal man, apparently; a professional with a good job in a nice office which overlooks one of the numerous parks in London. He’s also a hard-worker – he doesn’t refuse to do some overtime for arranging the following week, on Friday – and he has a lovely wife – Maggie – and a sweet five years old – Amanda. Friday is also family reunion day; in fact, Nora and Albert – Mark’s parents-in-law - were invited over his house for having dinner. Nora immediately appears to be a strong woman; not only – as described – is she still physically healthy, but she doesn’t back off rebuking Mark for being late. While Albert, although he’s slightly younger than Nora, feels the burden of getting older and older. Curiosity is his characteristic; Albert is over-excited and proud of his son-in-law academic articles and makes numerous questions about them. So far, so normal, we may say; Mark’s family is, indeed, a normal, regular family. But Mark hides something; he met two dodgy men after work. They have something for him, a special parcel, ready to be delivered where and when Mark wants. Will it be surprise for Maggie? Or possibly for Amanda? I’m not going to answer the questions, but I can only say that, well, it’s a very particular ‘parcel’. I’d like to spend a few words about the creation of Mark. I do remember, as if it had been yesterday, a sunny, warm day. I was on holiday and was having a nice glass of white wine in company of a dear friend of mine. We sat at a table overlooking the crowded beaches and people were getting ready to go back home. The rhythmical sound of waves was regularly interrupted by the cawing of seagulls. We talked about girlfriends; I, at that time, was sorted. I happily was in a relationship without any problem or trouble to be reported. My friend contrarily was going through a tough moment and he poured all his frustration and disappointment on my sensitive and serene ability of listening. This friend of mine became Mark – obviously, he had no killing instinct. He unconsciously inspired me; a person who had secrets to hide and slightly frustrated by the impossibility of disclosing and debating them for finding a solution. I think I should, one day, thank him. One last detail: the first part of the novella contains a huge incongruence. Exactly. There’s a huge incongruence in…well, I’m not going to disclose it, I’ll let the readers find it. “Saturday”, the second chapter of “The fear eater” is now available on Wattpad for free. For reading it and, if you haven’t yet, reading the first part CLICK HERE. Take care readers and see you soon! Novellas are strange creatures.
On one hand, it’s a kind of short writing that can be very satisfying and leave the readers to imagine the entire world you’ve just portrayed in those dense and limited pages. On the other hand, the brevity of the novella may, instead, be a flaw in the entire story. The readers get into a sort of frustration; what the writer communicated, and expressed is not enough to answer their fervent imagination, so they end up cursing and swearing at the author for not having given a complete explanation of that world. Although I knew about the difficulties I might have faced, I was tempted to make a little effort towards the creation of a novella. It’s funny. Anytime I conclude to write something, two thoughts pop out of my mind: firstly, how the characters have become part of me. Even though initially they’re mere puppets – allow me this definition - for the plot of the story, the more I carry on developing them, the more I personify and sympathise with them. If they’re sad, I turn sad. If they’re happy, a smile grows quickly on my lips. If they’re upset, you better off stay away from me for all the day long. Secondly, the process of how the ideas come up into my mind. It’s something unexpected: you may be with your girlfriend; you may be in the park enjoying a sunny day; you may be at work. You hear a single word or go through an unusual situation or meet a particular person, that instantly a wave of creativity sparks in you. That small thing which has just happened becomes a complex and articulated story. “The fear eater” is a crime novella of approximately a hundred pages. You can read it before sleeping, during your commuting to work or on a rainy afternoon. It tells the story of two detectives who have to deal with… Well, I think I’ll let you discover what is all this about. The first part of my work is available on Wattpad for free.
